Morocco re-elected unanimously to lead Francophone ambassadors group in Geneva
Morocco has been unanimously re-elected to chair the Group of Francophone Ambassadors in Geneva for the 2026–2027 term, with the country represented by its Permanent Representative to the United Nations Office and other international organizations in Geneva, Ambassador Omar Zniber.
The election took place on Tuesday at the Morocco Room of the Palais des Nations in Geneva, where Zniber thanked the members of the group for renewing their confidence in him. He said he intended to continue working to advance the group’s priorities and strengthen its contribution to international discussions.
The Group of Francophone Ambassadors brings together representatives of French-speaking countries and serves as a platform for coordination and dialogue within Geneva’s international institutions. Its work covers a range of issues relevant to the Francophone community and multilateral diplomacy.
Following his re-election, Zniber highlighted several areas that remain central to the group’s activities, including gender equality, linguistic diversity and digital issues. He also described the group’s role as a forum for developing proposals and maintaining dialogue with international organizations and their leadership.
The renewed mandate comes as digital transformation and artificial intelligence continue to occupy a growing place in international policy discussions. In July, Zniber, speaking as chair of the Francophone ambassadors group, called for greater participation by the Francophone community in global discussions on digital and artificial intelligence governance, emphasizing digital sovereignty, inclusion, ethics and linguistic diversity.
The group’s agenda also extends beyond technology. Its activities address issues linked to human rights, health, sustainable development, disarmament, trade and humanitarian affairs, reflecting the broad range of subjects discussed within Geneva’s multilateral institutions.
The meeting also resulted in the election of five vice-presidents representing different geographical regions. Chairs were additionally selected for committees dealing with trade and sustainable development, disarmament, human rights, digital affairs, health and humanitarian issues, and employment.
For Morocco, the renewed chairmanship gives its Geneva mission another opportunity to participate in coordination among Francophone diplomatic representatives. Omar Zniber has served as Morocco’s Permanent Representative in Geneva since 2018, according to the United Nations Office at Geneva.
The 2026–2027 mandate will unfold against a backdrop of growing international discussions on digital governance, multilingualism, human rights and sustainable development. The Francophone ambassadors group is expected to continue using Geneva’s multilateral institutions as a space for dialogue and coordination on these issues.
