Slovakia seeks EU support to restore Druzhba oil pipeline flows

Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico is expected to meet European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen this week to discuss the possible resumption of oil deliveries through the Druzhba oil pipeline, a major supply route connecting Russia with several Central European countries.

The meeting comes as Slovakia and Hungary increase diplomatic pressure on Ukraine to restore oil transit that has been disrupted since late January. According to Ukrainian authorities, the pipeline infrastructure was severely damaged after a Russian attack triggered a fire along part of the route.

The Druzhba pipeline — one of the largest oil transport systems in the world — has historically carried Russian crude to refineries across Central and Eastern Europe. The suspension of flows has raised concerns about energy supply stability in the region, particularly for countries that still rely heavily on this route.

Fico has warned that Slovakia could reconsider its position on certain European financial initiatives if the issue remains unresolved. Among the measures under discussion is a major European Union loan package intended to support Ukraine’s economy during the ongoing conflict with Russia.

Slovakia argues that restoring the pipeline’s operations is essential for regional energy security and economic stability. Hungarian officials have also expressed concern over the interruption, noting that the Druzhba pipeline remains a key source of crude oil for local refineries.

For the European Union, the situation highlights the complex balance between supporting Ukraine and ensuring energy stability among member states. Since the start of the war, the bloc has sought to reduce dependence on Russian energy, while at the same time managing supply risks for countries with limited alternatives.

Analysts say the upcoming discussions between Fico and von der Leyen could become an important moment in negotiations over energy transit, EU solidarity and the broader geopolitical tensions affecting Europe’s energy market.
