Seb plans global job cuts to restore profitability amid rising competition
French household appliance manufacturer Groupe SEB has announced a global cost-saving plan that could lead to the elimination of up to 2,100 jobs worldwide, including around 500 positions in France, as part of a broader strategy to restore profitability and adapt to intensifying international competition.
The restructuring plan, presented to labor unions alongside the company’s 2025 financial results, represents less than 7 percent of the group’s global workforce. The company employs tens of thousands of people worldwide and operates numerous industrial sites, particularly in Europe, where a significant share of its production capacity is located.
Chief executive Stanislas de Gramont stated that the main objective of the initiative is to regain a sustainable growth trajectory after a challenging financial year. According to the company, profitability was impacted by a complex economic environment marked by slower consumer demand, stronger competition — especially from Asian manufacturers — and disruptions linked to global trade conditions.
In France, the proposed job reductions are expected to be based on voluntary departures, with the company emphasizing that industrial production activities would not be directly affected. Instead, support functions such as finance, human resources, marketing, logistics and product development are likely to be the most impacted by the reorganization.
The group reported a slight decline in revenue in 2025, while operational performance weakened due to external pressures in key markets, including the United States. Executives also highlighted the rapid transformation of consumer behavior and the acceleration of innovation cycles in the household appliance sector, which require faster adaptation from established brands.
Another key factor in the restructuring is the growing role of artificial intelligence and digitalization in corporate operations. Management indicated that technological tools will contribute to operational rationalization and efficiency improvements, reflecting a broader trend across global manufacturing industries.
Beyond France, potential job reductions could also affect several European countries and regions outside Europe, as the company seeks to optimize its organizational structure and maintain competitiveness in a fast-evolving market. Analysts note that traditional appliance manufacturers are facing mounting pressure from new entrants, price competition and shifting consumer expectations.
Despite the restructuring announcement, investors reacted positively following the publication of financial results that exceeded market expectations. Market observers suggest that the cost-saving measures are being viewed as a strategic step aimed at stabilizing margins and strengthening the company’s long-term financial outlook.
