Saudi Arabia supports Yemeni forum amid southern conflict
Saudi Arabia has welcomed Yemen’s request for a diplomatic forum in Riyadh to address the ongoing conflict in southern Yemen, which has escalated in recent days. The Saudi Foreign Ministry called on all southern factions to participate in discussions aimed at developing a comprehensive and fair resolution for the southern cause.
The Presidential Leadership Council (PLC), backed by Saudi Arabia, urged various groups in the south to join the forum. The move comes after the Southern Transitional Council (STC), a separatist group, launched military operations in Hadramout and al-Mahra provinces, raising tensions with the internationally recognized Yemeni government.
Hadramout, bordering Saudi Arabia, holds cultural and historical significance for the kingdom, and the STC’s recent territorial gains have been seen as a security concern. The STC is part of the anti-Houthi coalition but has ambitions for southern independence, creating friction with its coalition partners.
The UAE has been accused of supporting the STC militarily, a charge it denies, emphasizing its continued support for Saudi security. Amid rising tensions, the UAE announced the return of its forces from Yemen, while the STC declared plans for a future referendum on independence.
Analysts warn that if unresolved, southern clashes could intensify the conflict and potentially reshape control in Yemen, creating broader regional instability.
