One dead and seven missing after migrant boat capsizes
One person has died and seven others are missing following the capsizing of a migrant boat early Saturday in the Aegean Sea off the western coast of Turkey, Turkish coast guard officials said.
According to an official statement, the inflatable boat began taking on water before dawn near the coastal town of Dikili, north of the city of Izmir. Thirty-seven passengers were rescued alive during the operation.
Dikili lies opposite the Greek island of Lesbos, located about 20 kilometers away, a key entry point for migrants attempting to reach the European Union. Search and rescue teams are continuing operations in the area in an effort to locate the seven migrants who remain unaccounted for.
Dangerous sea crossings between Turkey and nearby Greek islands remain common, with shipwrecks frequently reported along this migration route. Data from the International Organization for Migration (IOM) indicate that nearly 1,900 migrants died or went missing in the Mediterranean in 2025.
