Trump suggests renaming the Strait of Hormuz after claiming U.S. control

U.S. President Donald Trump has floated the idea of renaming the Strait of Hormuz the “Trump Strait” after claiming that the United States has gained control over the strategically vital waterway.

In a post on his Truth Social platform, Trump asked whether the strait should be renamed now that it was allegedly under U.S. control, adding a provocative reference to its strategic importance and the United States itself.

The comments came amid renewed military tensions between Washington and Tehran. Trump has claimed that the United States has achieved near-total control of the waterway, a statement rejected by Iranian authorities. The confrontation has included U.S. strikes on Iranian targets in the region and Iranian attacks against American and allied positions.

The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world’s most important maritime passages, connecting the Persian Gulf with the Gulf of Oman and the Indian Ocean. Under normal circumstances, roughly one-fifth of global oil shipments pass through the strait, making any disruption to traffic potentially significant for international energy markets.

Commercial shipping has reportedly declined sharply since the outbreak of the conflict as security concerns have increased. Recent maritime tracking data showed only four commercial vessels carrying goods crossing the strait on Tuesday, compared with 10 the previous day and an average of around 13 vessels over the preceding 10 days. Tracking data may not capture every ship, particularly when vessels disable their identification systems.

Trump had previously suggested an even more controversial change in August, saying he could consider treating the Strait of Hormuz as U.S. territory. Iranian officials rejected the idea, while questions remained over whether the statement represented an actual policy proposal or political rhetoric.

Washington has sought to establish a stronger military and security presence around the waterway, including efforts to protect commercial shipping and counter any attempts to disrupt maritime traffic. The United States also launched an operation known as “Project Freedom” in May to assist vessels affected by the crisis and facilitate their passage.

Iran, however, continues to reject Washington’s claims of control over the strait. The waterway has consequently become one of the most sensitive flashpoints in the confrontation between the two countries, with developments there carrying consequences for global trade, oil prices and maritime security.

Trump’s latest proposal to attach his name to the strait comes as tensions between Washington and Tehran remain high, with continued exchanges of military strikes and warnings that the conflict could expand. Meanwhile, shipping activity through the Strait of Hormuz remains substantially below levels recorded before the escalation.
