Musk unveils Macrohard AI system built jointly by Tesla and xAI
Elon Musk announced that Tesla and his artificial intelligence company xAI have joined forces to develop a new AI system called Macrohard, also referred to as Digital Optimus. The system is designed to operate computers autonomously and perform office tasks in real time.
Musk revealed the project on March 11 in a post on X, describing it as the first concrete product tied to Tesla’s controversial 2 billion dollar investment in xAI. The announcement came only days after reports suggested the Macrohard project had struggled internally at xAI amid executive departures and organizational turmoil.
According to Musk, the system relies on a two layer architecture. Grok, the large language model developed by xAI, acts as the primary navigator with deep contextual understanding, while Digital Optimus performs real time execution. The system processes the most recent seconds of screen video and translates it into keyboard and mouse actions.
Musk compared the design to the human brain’s dual process theory. In this framework, Digital Optimus handles fast instinctive actions similar to a “System 1” response, while Grok performs slower analytical reasoning comparable to “System 2.”
The platform is designed to run on Tesla’s AI4 chip, priced at about 650 dollars, while using limited amounts of more expensive Nvidia hardware operated by xAI. Musk said the system could theoretically simulate the entire workflow of a company, which he suggested inspired the name Macrohard, an apparent reference to Microsoft.
The timing of the announcement is notable because the project had recently faced internal setbacks. A Business Insider report indicated that Macrohard had stalled within xAI after a hiring freeze and the suspension of a large data project that employed around 600 contractors. More than 20 engineers linked to the initiative also left the company.
Toby Pohlen, a founding member of xAI who was appointed in February to lead the Macrohard effort, left the company just 16 days after taking the role. According to Fortune, six of the company’s original twelve cofounders have now departed.
By reframing Macrohard as a joint initiative between Tesla and xAI, Musk appears to be repositioning the project within a broader partnership agreement between the two companies. Tesla disclosed the framework for that cooperation when it released its fourth quarter 2025 earnings report in January.
The announcement may intensify scrutiny from Tesla shareholders who have already challenged Musk in court over alleged conflicts of interest. A 2024 lawsuit accused the chief executive of diverting artificial intelligence talent, resources, and strategic opportunities away from Tesla toward xAI, a company he fully controls.
Tesla nevertheless proceeded with its 2 billion dollar investment in xAI even after shareholders rejected the proposal in an advisory vote in November 2025, according to TechCrunch.
The collaboration also contradicts earlier remarks from Musk. In September 2024 he wrote that there was no need for Tesla to license technology from xAI and stated that xAI models would not be able to run on Tesla vehicle inference computers. The Digital Optimus system now explicitly combines Grok with Tesla hardware, the arrangement Musk had previously dismissed.
