Pope Leo decries sharp intensification of war in Ukraine
Pope Leo XIV has expressed deep concern over what he described as a “sharp intensification” of the war in Ukraine, warning that the conflict continues to cause widespread human suffering and destruction.
Speaking during his weekly general audience at the Vatican, the Pope addressed pilgrims gathered in St. Peter’s Square, where he called for renewed attention to the plight of civilians affected by recent attacks.
The pontiff stated that war does not resolve problems but instead deepens instability, increases hatred, and multiplies human suffering. He emphasized that ongoing violence continues to destroy homes, places of worship, and innocent lives caught in the conflict.
Pope Leo XIV also expressed solidarity with victims and urged the international community to pursue peaceful solutions. His remarks come amid continued reports of missile and drone strikes intensifying in several regions of Ukraine.
The Vatican has repeatedly called for dialogue and humanitarian protection since the beginning of the conflict, maintaining its position as a vocal advocate for peace.
