Ten Indian sailors freed in Iran after months of detention

Ten Indian sailors detained in Iran since mid-2025 have been released following what authorities described as sustained diplomatic efforts, according to maritime officials in India.

The sailors were part of the crew aboard the vessel MV Harbour Phoenix, which was intercepted near the port of Jask in the Gulf region. Iranian authorities had previously detained the ship, accusing it of alleged illegal fuel transport activities, a claim frequently made in similar maritime incidents in the area.

India’s Directorate General of Shipping confirmed that the crew members have now been released and are safe. Arrangements are currently being coordinated to ensure their safe return to India in the coming days.

Officials in New Delhi have not provided detailed public comments on the specific circumstances of the arrest or the vessel’s status, which some maritime tracking services identify as a tanker registered under a foreign flag.

The case highlights ongoing maritime tensions in the Gulf region, particularly around strategic waterways such as the Strait of Hormuz, a critical passage for global energy trade. India, one of the world’s largest energy importers, relies heavily on this route for its crude oil supplies.
