Cuba faces a critical historical moment, warns writer Leonardo Padura

Cuban writer Leonardo Padura has warned that Cuba is experiencing “a very serious historical moment” marked by political uncertainty, economic hardship, and growing international tensions. Speaking during an event at the Instituto Cervantes in Paris, the acclaimed novelist said that “all scenarios are possible,” including the risk of a military escalation involving the United States.

Padura made the remarks while presenting the French edition of his book Going to Havana. The author, widely recognized for his detective novels featuring the character Mario Conde, expressed concern about the current situation on the island and called for dialogue instead of confrontation.

For several years, Cuba has been struggling with a severe economic crisis characterized by inflation, shortages of food and fuel, electricity outages, and increasing migration. The situation has intensified following additional economic restrictions imposed by the United States.

Recent measures announced by the administration of Donald Trump have increased pressure on Havana. These sanctions target foreign companies cooperating with the Cuban government and have raised concerns among international observers about the future stability of the island.

Padura stressed that Cuba’s future should be determined through social dialogue and internal reforms rather than external pressure. According to the writer, many Cubans are demanding changes that respond to the country’s social and economic realities.

The novelist also highlighted the unpredictability of the current moment, explaining that Cuba’s situation differs from other regional crises and could evolve in several directions. Despite the tensions, he expressed hope that peaceful solutions and constructive discussions would prevail.
