Mpox Cases in Africa Surpass 62,000 in 2024, with Over 1,200 Deaths
Mpox cases in Africa have surpassed 62,000 since the start of 2024, with more than 13,500 confirmed infections and 1,200 related deaths, according to a recent report from the Africa Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC). The latest data highlights the gravity of the outbreak, as it continues to spread across the continent.
The Africa CDC's report indicates a total of 62,171 cases of Mpox, including 13,579 confirmed infections and 1,200 fatalities. In response to the crisis, both the Africa CDC and the World Health Organization (WHO) declared Mpox a public health emergency. This declaration was made to raise awareness and mobilize resources to combat the outbreak.
Following the emergency declaration, health authorities rolled out a six-month continental response plan in collaboration with the WHO. This plan, which aims to halt the spread of Mpox and strengthen healthcare systems in the affected regions, has been allocated nearly USD 600 million. These efforts reflect a concerted attempt to address the public health crisis and mitigate its impact across Africa.
