Morocco takes decisive action against measles outbreak in schools
In response to a concerning rise in measles cases and associated fatalities, Morocco's ministries of health and national education have issued a directive mandating the temporary exclusion of students diagnosed with contagious diseases from school. This joint initiative aims to curb the spread of infections in educational settings, which are known hotspots for disease transmission.
The circular emphasizes that many children can unknowingly spread infections during the early stages of illness, particularly during the incubation period or even after symptoms have manifested. Measles, in particular, poses serious threats to both individual and public health. Recent data from the World Health Organization (WHO) has highlighted an alarming increase in measles cases globally and within Morocco.
This initiative is part of Morocco's broader National Plan to Combat Measles and the National School and University Health Program. The primary objectives are to prevent the transmission of infections, facilitate the recovery of affected students, and safeguard the health of the school community.
The decision to exclude a student will be based on the severity of their illness and overall health condition, with mandatory exclusion particularly emphasized for boarding schools following medical evaluations. Schools are instructed to promptly inform parents and guardians if their child is required to remain at home due to an infectious disease.
Furthermore, the ministries have stressed the importance of raising awareness among students and their families regarding infectious diseases and their prevention. In light of the recent surge in measles cases and fatalities, health professionals have been mobilized to thoroughly investigate suspected instances and implement necessary measures, including school exclusions. When appropriate, relevant authorities will issue medical certificates to confirm such exclusions, ensuring a structured approach to managing this health crisis.
