Teacher critically injured in school stabbing in southern France
A teacher was left in critical condition on Tuesday after being attacked with a knife by a pupil at a secondary school in southern France, prompting renewed concerns over safety in educational institutions.
According to French education authorities, the incident occurred at a middle school in the town of Sanary-sur-Mer. The victim, a 60-year-old art teacher, was assaulted by a 14-year-old student during a class attended by several other pupils.
Prosecutors said preliminary information suggests there had been recent tensions between the teacher and the student. Investigators are continuing to examine the circumstances and possible motives behind the attack.
Emergency services were dispatched to the school, and the injured teacher was transferred to hospital for urgent treatment. Following the incident, the school was evacuated and classes scheduled for the following day were cancelled.
France’s education minister expressed solidarity with the victim, her family, and the wider school community, describing the incident as deeply shocking. Authorities emphasized that support measures would be put in place for students and staff affected by the event.
The case has once again sparked debate in France over violence in schools and the need for preventive measures to ensure the safety of teachers and students.
