Morocco showcases world-class security strategy for AFCON 2025

The 2025 Africa Cup of Nations opened in Morocco in an atmosphere of calm and precision, the result of years of strategic preparation. Behind the exhilaration of the matches and the excitement in the stands, a sophisticated security system operates with surgical efficiency, positioning the Kingdom as a global model in the management of major international events.

From the opening ceremony, the presence of Abdellatif Hammouchi, Director General of National Security and Territorial Surveillance (DGSN-DGST), underscored the strategic magnitude of the tournament. His direct involvement went beyond protocol, representing a leadership approach rooted in total engagement and proactive vigilance. The mission is clear: ensure that safety measures remain invisible yet decisive so that the true focus stays on the sport.

Technological modernization and strategic infrastructure

Prior to the tournament, Morocco’s General Directorate of National Security underwent a sweeping transformation of its operational methods. The strategy, designed as a long-term national legacy, integrated technological innovation and infrastructural modernization rather than mere expansion of human resources. This plan aligns Morocco’s standards with the most stringent international security criteria, meeting the requirements of the Confederation of African Football (CAF) and other global institutions.

A cornerstone of this modernization lies in a vast digital surveillance network installed across host cities including Casablanca, Rabat, Marrakech, and Tangier. More than 6,000 fixed and mobile cameras feed into advanced command centers, creating a connected system that facilitates real-time crowd monitoring and rapid responses, ensuring an orderly and safe spectator experience.

Integrated security within stadiums

Each sports venue now functions as a fully autonomous security unit equipped with an internal police station and a high-tech coordination center. This allows for efficient crowd flow management and immediate intervention should any disruptions arise, placing public safety at the forefront of each event.

To reinforce this multi-tiered system, specialized units have been deployed, including anti-gang task forces, K9 brigades, cavalry divisions, and 16 drone surveillance teams providing aerial coverage across key urban areas and access routes.

Renewed fleet and inclusive identity

On the logistical front, Morocco introduced over a thousand new vehicles, motorbikes, and mobile command units. Notably, several carry a modern design featuring the Amazigh language, reflecting an institution that blends modernity with cultural authenticity.

Human capital remains vital to the entire system. More than 3,300 newly trained officers have been prepared for the management of mass gatherings, emphasizing de-escalation techniques and public assistance to accommodate the diversity of fans from across Africa and beyond.

Border innovations and lasting legacy

Travel logistics have also benefited from innovation. The DGSN, in coordination with the National Airports Office, launched the E-GATE biometric system at Marrakech-Menara Airport to accelerate border procedures and reduce waiting times for thousands of incoming visitors.

In parallel, Morocco reinforced its territorial units, including new brigades dedicated to fighting urban crime in Marrakech and Fez. Supported by cavalry and canine units, these additions represent both tactical and structural investment meant to endure beyond AFCON, strengthening national security well into the future.

Coordination and national pride

The backbone of Morocco’s security strategy lies in its inter-institutional coordination. Continuous collaboration among local authorities, police forces, civil protection services, and CAF ensures the flexibility needed to adapt to each stage of the event.
