Trump criticizes Team USA skier over political remarks
US President Donald Trump has publicly criticized American freestyle skier Hunter Hess following comments the athlete made about the political climate in the United States during the Milano Cortina Winter Games in Italy. The remarks have sparked a broader debate over the role of political expression by athletes competing under the national flag.
Hess, a member of Team USA, told reporters that representing his country came with “mixed emotions,” explaining that recent political developments made it difficult for him to feel fully comfortable. While emphasizing his pride in competing for his friends, family, and personal values, the skier noted that wearing the national colors did not mean endorsing all aspects of the current political situation.
Trump responded on social media by questioning Hess’s commitment to the country, stating that it was difficult to support an athlete who, in his view, did not fully stand behind the United States. His comments were quickly amplified by other conservative figures, who argued that national representation in international competitions should come with unequivocal support for the country.
Several political allies of the former president echoed this criticism, suggesting that athletes competing for the US should refrain from public political commentary. Others went further, calling on Hess to reconsider representing the country if he felt conflicted about its direction.
The controversy has reignited an ongoing discussion in the US over freedom of expression in sports, particularly when athletes speak openly about political or social issues while competing on the global stage. Supporters of Hess argue that athletes, like all citizens, have the right to voice personal opinions, while critics insist that international competition calls for political neutrality.
