Guillaume Meurice dismissal case headed for new labor court hearing
The legal battle surrounding the dismissal of French comedian Guillaume Meurice is set to continue, after labor court judges failed to reach a unanimous decision on the case. As a result, a new hearing will be held, with a professional judge expected to break the deadlock.
Meurice, a former regular contributor to public radio station France Inter, was dismissed by Radio France in 2024 following controversial remarks in which he compared Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to a Nazi figure. The comments, repeated on air despite an earlier warning, sparked a major public backlash and reignited debate in France over the boundaries of humor and freedom of expression.
Challenging the legality of his dismissal, Meurice is seeking around €400,000 in damages, arguing that his firing constitutes an unjustified sanction against a comedian for remarks made in a satirical context. His lawyers maintain that such a precedent could have far-reaching consequences for artistic freedom in public broadcasting.
Radio France, for its part, insists that the comedian committed serious professional misconduct and breached his duty of loyalty by repeating remarks deemed offensive and inappropriate, particularly in a highly sensitive geopolitical context. The broadcaster has defended its decision as necessary to uphold editorial responsibility and institutional values.
As the four labor court advisers examining the case were unable to agree, the dispute will now be referred to a so-called “tie-breaking judge.” According to judicial sources, the delay before a final ruling could range from several months to more than a year.
The case continues to draw attention within media and cultural circles, symbolizing broader tensions between free expression, editorial limits and accountability in publicly funded media.
