Robot dogs to assist Mexican police during 2026 World Cup
Mexican authorities announced Monday that a group of robot dogs will assist police forces in maintaining security during the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which Mexico will co-host with the United States and Canada.
The four-legged robots are equipped to enter potentially dangerous areas and transmit live video back to officers, allowing them to assess situations before intervening. According to the city council of Guadalupe in Nuevo León, which will host one of the tournament’s venues, the robots were purchased for approximately 2.5 million pesos ($145,000).
During a recent demonstration, a robot dog was shown navigating an abandoned building, climbing stairs, and broadcasting images to officers following behind. In a simulated encounter, the robot confronted an armed individual and instructed him to disarm using a loudspeaker system.
The mayor of Guadalupe, Héctor García, explained that the robots are intended to support officers during initial interventions and to enhance their safety. They are expected to be deployed in case of confrontations or emergencies during the matches.
BBVA Stadium, temporarily renamed Estadio Monterrey for the tournament, will host four World Cup games this summer, with the robot dogs forming part of broader security measures.
