Morocco elected to the African Union peace and security council

Morocco has been elected to the Peace and Security Council (PSC) of the African Union (AU) for a two-year term, securing its seat in the first round of voting held in Addis Ababa.

The Kingdom obtained more than two-thirds of the votes — 34 in total — during the election conducted on the sidelines of the 48th Ordinary Session of the AU Executive Council. The outcome reflects broad support among member states for Morocco’s diplomatic engagement and role within continental institutions.

Since rejoining the African Union in 2017, Morocco has served twice on the Peace and Security Council: first for a two-year mandate from 2018 to 2020, and later for a three-year term from 2022 to 2025. During these mandates, Rabat has positioned itself as an active participant in discussions aimed at strengthening conflict prevention mechanisms and improving institutional practices within the council.

The Peace and Security Council is the African Union’s standing decision-making body responsible for conflict prevention, management, and resolution across the continent. It plays a central role in addressing crises, coordinating peace support operations, and promoting stability and security in member states.

Morocco is participating in the Executive Council session through a delegation led by Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita. The meeting precedes the 39th Summit of AU Heads of State and Government, scheduled for February 14 and 15 in the Ethiopian capital.

The election underscores Morocco’s continued diplomatic engagement in African affairs and its stated commitment to multilateral cooperation in support of peace and development across the continent.
