New hydrocarbon field discovered in Côte d’Ivoire

Côte d’Ivoire has announced the discovery of a major new offshore hydrocarbon field, strengthening its ambitions to become a key energy producer in West Africa. The Italian energy group Eni, in partnership with the national company Petroci, revealed reserves estimated at around 1.4 billion barrels of oil equivalent.

According to a statement from the Ivorian government, the new field, named CALAO South, was identified in early February 2026 following drilling operations at a depth of more than 5,000 meters. Initial analyses indicate the presence of light crude oil, natural gas and condensates.

This discovery adds to several significant offshore finds made in recent years, which have already positioned Côte d’Ivoire among the emerging hydrocarbon producers in the region. Authorities believe these resources could allow the country to become a net exporter of crude oil before the end of the decade.

Although Côte d’Ivoire remains behind major African producers such as Nigeria and Libya, the government has set ambitious targets: reaching daily production levels of around 200,000 barrels of oil and 450 million cubic feet of gas by 2028.

Officials also emphasize that the growing energy potential strengthens the country’s attractiveness for foreign investors, at a time when regional demand for energy continues to rise.
