Five dead in apartment fire near Barcelona
Five people have died and four others sustained minor injuries following a fire in a residential building in northeastern Spain, regional emergency services confirmed.
The blaze broke out late Monday in the town of Manlleu, located around 60 kilometers north of Barcelona, within the autonomous community of Catalonia. According to firefighters, the fire started in a storage area situated in the upper section of the building.
Emergency crews were alerted after residents reported smoke filling the stairwell. Firefighters said that once the flames were brought under control, they discovered one victim in cardiorespiratory arrest. Four additional victims were later found in the storage space, and despite rescue efforts, they could not be saved.
Spanish media reported that the victims were young individuals who had gathered in the attic area, which was being used as a storage room. Authorities have not yet released the identities of those who died.
Among the four people who suffered minor injuries, three were treated and later discharged from hospital, while a fourth declined transportation to a medical facility.
Police have launched an investigation to determine the cause of the fire. Officials have indicated that further details will be provided as inquiries progress.
