Türkiye prepares new social media regulations to protect children
Türkiye is preparing to introduce new regulations aimed at strengthening protections for children on social media platforms, according to Family and Social Services Minister Mahinur Özdemir Göktaş.
In a statement shared on the domestic social media platform NSosyal, Göktaş said authorities are close to implementing measures designed to shield minors from the negative effects of prolonged digital exposure. She pointed to growing global concern over the psychological and developmental impact of constant online stimulation, particularly among younger users.
The minister highlighted research suggesting that average attention spans have significantly declined in recent years, with children experiencing sharper decreases than adults. According to her remarks, this trend is affecting concentration levels, social relationships and academic performance. She also noted that educators face increasing challenges in classrooms where digital habits influence students’ focus and engagement.
Türkiye’s planned reforms are part of a broader international movement toward tighter oversight of online platforms. Governments across Europe, Asia and North America are debating age restrictions, parental controls and algorithm transparency in response to concerns over cyberbullying, inappropriate content and excessive screen time.
Göktaş emphasized that the objective is not to restrict access entirely but to ensure a safer and more responsible digital environment. She called on parents and teachers to collaborate with public authorities in guiding children’s online behavior and promoting balanced technology use.
The initiative reflects Türkiye’s intention to align with evolving global standards on digital governance while addressing domestic concerns about youth well-being in an increasingly connected society.
