Morocco commemorates the 46th anniversary of Oued Eddahab’s reintegration
This Thursday, Morocco marks the 46th anniversary of the recovery of Oued Eddahab, a milestone in the country’s continued efforts to complete its territorial integrity. The occasion is celebrated in a spirit of national unity and patriotic commitment, reaffirming the population’s steadfast attachment to the Alaouite Throne.
On August 14, 1979, tribal leaders, scholars, and dignitaries from Oued Eddahab traveled to the Royal Palace in Rabat to pledge allegiance to the late King Hassan II, expressing their unwavering loyalty to Morocco and its sovereignty. This symbolic act reinforced their Moroccan identity in the face of external disputes.
During the ceremony, the Sovereign delivered a historic speech, emphasizing the sacred nature of the allegiance and promising security, development, and inclusion for the region. As a further sign of integration and defense, the King distributed arms to local tribal representatives — a powerful gesture underscoring the determination to protect the Southern Provinces.
Shortly after, Hassan II made a historic visit to Dakhla, deepening the bond between the monarchy and the people of the south. This unity has since remained a key pillar in resisting external pressures and maintaining national cohesion.
Decades of progress in the Southern Provinces
Following the reintegration of Oued Eddahab, Morocco has consistently invested in the socioeconomic development of its southern territories. From Tarfaya (1958) to Sidi Ifni (1969) and the Green March to Laayoune (1975), these efforts have culminated in a broader vision for a modern, integrated, and prosperous South.
Today, the Southern Provinces—particularly Dakhla and Laayoune—benefit from major infrastructure projects, positioning them as strategic hubs for commerce, energy, and international cooperation.
HM King Mohammed VI, continuing the vision of his late father, places strategic importance on the southern regions, supporting not only development but also reinforcing Morocco’s Autonomy Plan for the Sahara as a solution to regional disputes.
A tribute to resistance and history
To honor the anniversary, the High Commission for Former Resistance Fighters and Liberation Army Members (HCAR) is organizing a national gathering in Dakhla. Veterans will be honored, and financial support will be granted to their families. Educational and cultural events will also be held throughout the country, preserving the memory of this historic achievement and passing it on to future generations.
