Morocco and Spain Strengthen Their Shared Vision for Regional Stability
Bilateral relations between Morocco and Spain have made significant strides since 2022, particularly after Spain joined other nations in recognizing Morocco’s Autonomy Plan as a viable solution to the Western Sahara issue. This diplomatic shift has paved the way for greater cooperation in various fields, particularly in economic, political, and cultural spheres. Andrés Perelló Rodríguez, the Director-General of Casa Mediterráneo, emphasized Morocco's importance as a strategic partner for Spain during a visit aimed at fostering connections between economic stakeholders and civil society.
Casa Mediterráneo, a Spanish public diplomacy institution founded in 2009, has been instrumental in building bridges between Spain and countries around the Mediterranean, with a particular focus on fostering cultural exchange, mutual understanding, and economic collaboration. Ahead of his visit to Morocco, Perelló Rodríguez underscored the importance of deepening partnerships with Morocco, expressing that his mission was to create synergies between economic actors in both countries. Additionally, he revealed plans for cultural and commercial forums to be hosted in 2025, aimed at reinforcing institutional and business collaboration.
Perelló Rodríguez spoke of the shared responsibility between Morocco and Spain, emphasizing their crucial roles as gateways between Europe and Africa. He highlighted their joint efforts in promoting regional stability and prosperity. This vision of mutual cooperation has already led to tangible results, such as Morocco’s participation as the guest of honor at the Alicante Gastronomy Fair in September.
Spain’s Foreign Affairs Minister, José Manuel Albares, has frequently acknowledged Morocco’s strategic importance. In a March speech at the Spanish Senate, Albares described Morocco as a “key partner” in crucial areas such as counterterrorism, dismantling jihadist networks, combating irregular migration, and enhancing Spain’s economic framework. He stressed the importance of maintaining strong ties with Morocco, considering them essential to Spain’s foreign policy.
Since 2022, relations between the two countries have grown stronger, notably after Spain’s recognition of Morocco’s Autonomy Plan as “the most serious and credible” resolution to the Western Sahara conflict. This development has further cemented cooperation, setting the stage for deeper and more fruitful collaboration in the years to come.
By building on these advancements, both nations aim to set an example for regional cooperation, demonstrating the potential of strong, strategic partnerships between neighboring countries in the Mediterranean and beyond.
