Morocco and Mauritania strengthen energy cooperation
Morocco and Mauritania have reaffirmed their commitment to accelerating cooperation in the fields of electricity and renewable energy. Moroccan Minister of Energy Transition and Sustainable Development, Leila Benali, met with her Mauritanian counterpart, Mohamed Ould Khaled, Minister of Petroleum, Energy and Mines, on the sidelines of the Mauritanides forum in Nouakchott.
The meeting took place during the 7th edition of the International Conference and Exhibition Mauritanides, in the presence of Morocco’s ambassador to Mauritania, Hamid Chabar, and senior officials from both countries. The two sides emphasized the strategic importance of strengthening energy partnerships to ensure regional energy security while harnessing natural and industrial potential.
Both ministers welcomed the progress already achieved, underlining a shared vision for a sustainable energy transition that serves not only Morocco and Mauritania but also contributes to Africa’s broader ambitions in decarbonization and energy integration.
According to a statement from the Moroccan ministry, discussions focused on advancing the electricity interconnection project and promoting joint initiatives in the mining and energy sectors. Minister Benali stressed the importance of diversifying energy sources and developing localized industries to enhance competitiveness.
The Mauritanides forum, inaugurated by Mauritanian President Mohamed Ould Cheikh El Ghazouani, brings together regional and international actors in the mining, energy, and clean energy sectors, with a particular focus on green hydrogen and natural gas. The event aims to serve as a platform for exchange and investment to accelerate the energy transition in West Africa.
