Moroccan football mourns the loss of legendary Ahmed Faras at 78

Faras’ contributions to Moroccan football, both with his hometown club and the national team, have left an enduring legacy.
The Royal Moroccan Football Federation demonstrated its gratitude for Faras’ contributions by covering his medical expenses in recent years. Known for his unwavering loyalty, Faras devoted his entire career to SC Chabab Mohammedia, where he played from 1964 until retiring in 1982. His leadership and skill led the club to its first national championship title in 1980, cementing his status as a local hero.
A celebrated career with club and country
Faras, a prolific striker and elegant technician, was a dominant force in Moroccan football. He was the league’s top scorer in 1969 and 1973 and achieved significant victories with SC Chabab Mohammedia, including two Throne Cup titles in 1972 and 1975, the National Supercup in 1975, and the Maghreb Cup Winners’ Cup in 1973. His achievements with the club showcased his remarkable talent and dedication.
On the international stage, Ahmed Faras became a true icon. As Morocco’s captain, he led the Atlas Lions to their first-ever FIFA World Cup appearance in Mexico in 1970. His crowning achievement came in 1976, when he guided Morocco to its only Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) title in Ethiopia. Faras’ exceptional performance earned him the title of best player in the tournament, solidifying his reputation as a benchmark in African football.
In 1975, Faras became the first Moroccan to win the African Golden Ball, an honor that highlighted his extraordinary contributions to the sport in Morocco and beyond.
