Macron threatens China with tariffs to protect European industry
French President Emmanuel Macron has warned China that Europe may impose tariffs in the coming months if Beijing does not take steps to reduce its growing trade deficit with the European Union. Macron made the remarks following an official visit to China, where he met with students at Sichuan University.
Macron emphasized that the Chinese trade practices are affecting the heart of Europe’s industrial and innovation model, historically centered on machinery and automotive sectors. He noted that U.S. protectionist measures have further complicated the situation by redirecting Chinese exports toward European markets.
While acknowledging the difficulty of uniting all European countries on the issue—Germany being cautious due to its strong presence in China—Macron stressed the importance of attracting Chinese investments to Europe. Sectors such as batteries, lithium refining, wind energy, photovoltaics, electric vehicles, robotics, and advanced components are central to this strategy.
Macron also highlighted the need for Europe to protect itself from predatory investments that could create dependencies. At the same time, he called for renewed policies to enhance competitiveness, including a deeper single market, investments in innovation, border protection, completion of the customs union, and monetary policy adjustments.
