French PM dismisses no-confidence motion over heatwave response as political maneuver
French Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu has rejected a parliamentary no-confidence motion centered on the government’s response to the recent heatwave, accusing its sponsors of exploiting the tragedy for political purposes rather than seeking a constructive debate.
Speaking before the National Assembly on Monday, Lecornu criticized lawmakers backing the motion, which was introduced by the Green parliamentary group, arguing that it misrepresented the impact of the heatwave and unfairly blamed the government for deaths linked to the extreme weather.
The prime minister said it was inappropriate to present provisional mortality figures as definitive or to combine deaths from different causes in an attempt to attribute responsibility to the government. He described such claims as a serious error rather than a legitimate warning.
Lecornu also argued that the initiative was not genuinely intended to encourage discussion on France’s preparedness for extreme heat or its climate adaptation policies. Instead, he said, the motion was driven by political objectives, insisting that “no one is fooled” by its underlying purpose.
While firmly rejecting the accusations contained in the motion, the prime minister acknowledged that questions about improving the country’s resilience to climate change are both valid and necessary. He said there is room for meaningful debate on strengthening France’s adaptation measures without resorting to what he characterized as the politicization of victims.
The parliamentary exchange comes as France continues to assess the consequences of recent high temperatures, with climate resilience and emergency preparedness becoming increasingly prominent issues in national political debate.
Although the opposition has sought to hold the government accountable for its handling of the heatwave, the executive maintains that ongoing evaluations should be based on verified data and that future policy discussions should focus on reinforcing long-term adaptation strategies rather than political confrontation.
