France and Burkina Faso complete reciprocal diplomatic withdrawal amid deepening rift
Diplomatic relations between France and Burkina Faso have reached a new low as both countries complete the withdrawal of their respective diplomatic personnel following the collapse of formal ties.
French authorities confirmed that all diplomats previously stationed in Burkina Faso returned to France at the end of last week. In a reciprocal measure, Burkina Faso's diplomatic staff in France has been instructed to leave French territory by Monday evening.
Reciprocal measures follow diplomatic rupture
The latest developments stem from Burkina Faso's decision announced on June 26 to sever diplomatic relations with France, marking a significant escalation in already strained ties between the two countries.
Following that announcement, France summoned Burkina Faso's chargé d'affaires in Paris and formally notified the mission that its diplomatic personnel would also be required to depart within seven days. French officials described the decision as a reciprocal response to Ouagadougou's move.
Paris said it regretted the breakdown in relations, characterizing Burkina Faso's decision as unjustified and stressing that it had acted accordingly after the unilateral diplomatic rupture.
France rejects terrorism allegations
French officials also firmly dismissed accusations made by Burkina Faso's authorities alleging that France supports terrorist groups operating in the Sahel. The Foreign Ministry described the claims as entirely unfounded.
According to Paris, France remains committed to combating terrorism internationally and continues to condemn attacks targeting civilians across the Sahel region. The ministry emphasized that local populations remain the primary victims of the ongoing security crisis affecting several West African countries.
French authorities further highlighted the country's longstanding involvement in counterterrorism operations, noting that France has paid a significant price through years of military engagement against extremist organizations.
Security advice for French nationals
In light of the deteriorating political and diplomatic environment, the French government has renewed its call for heightened vigilance among French citizens in Burkina Faso and across the region.
The diplomatic breakdown reflects the broader realignment underway in parts of the Sahel, where several military-led governments have redefined their foreign partnerships and reduced cooperation with traditional Western allies. The end of formal diplomatic representation between Paris and Ouagadougou underscores the depth of the current crisis and signals that relations are unlikely to improve in the near term.
