Citi expands bullion business with London gold clearing approval
Citi has secured a pivotal role in the global precious metals market after becoming the fifth institution authorized to clear transactions in London's over-the-counter gold market, strengthening its position in one of the world's most influential bullion trading hubs.
The approval gives the U.S. banking group direct access to the settlement infrastructure that supports daily gold trading valued at approximately $160 billion, marking a significant expansion of its precious metals franchise.
Citi joins an exclusive clearing network
With its admission, Citi enters a highly selective group of financial institutions responsible for clearing gold trades in London. The network now comprises HSBC, ICBC Standard Bank, JPMorgan, UBS, and Citi.
These institutions operate through London Precious Metals Clearing Limited (LPMCL), the organization that facilitates settlement for the London bullion market. Collectively, LPMCL members process more than 20 million ounces of gold each day on average, making the system a cornerstone of global precious metals trading.
Governance reforms pave the way
Citi's approval follows recent changes to the governance framework of LPMCL, including clearer membership criteria and strengthened oversight of the clearing system.
The revised structure was designed to improve transparency and establish a more formal process for admitting new participants, opening the door for additional competition while preserving the operational resilience of London's bullion market.
The changes reflect broader efforts to modernize the infrastructure supporting one of the world's largest over-the-counter commodity markets.
Strategic boost for precious metals operations
By gaining clearing status, Citi will be able to process eligible bullion transactions directly rather than relying on another clearing member, improving operational efficiency and enhancing services for institutional clients active in the gold market.
The move also reinforces the bank's ambitions to expand its presence across precious metals trading, an area that has attracted growing interest from investors seeking diversification and protection against geopolitical and macroeconomic uncertainty.
As demand for gold continues to evolve amid shifting global economic conditions, direct participation in London's clearing system positions Citi at the center of international bullion trading.
