Tencent unit targets up to $1.55 billion through Kuaishou share sale
A subsidiary of Tencent Holdings is seeking to raise as much as $1.55 billion by selling part of its stake in Kuaishou Technology, according to a term sheet reviewed by Reuters, in a move that could become one of the largest secondary share offerings in Hong Kong’s technology sector this year.
The transaction is being led by Tencent Mobility, an investment unit of Tencent, which plans to divest a portion of its holdings in the Chinese short-video platform through a block sale to institutional investors.
The proposed offering reflects continued portfolio management by one of China’s largest technology companies, as major internet groups increasingly rebalance investments while seeking to optimize capital allocation.
Kuaishou, one of China’s leading short-form video and live-streaming platforms, has remained a significant player in the country’s digital content market, competing with other major social media and entertainment services for users, advertisers, and e-commerce activity.
Although the financial terms indicate a fundraising target of up to $1.55 billion, details including the final pricing, number of shares to be sold, and the completion timeline could change depending on investor demand during the book-building process.
Tencent has gradually reduced stakes in several listed companies over recent years through dividends, distributions, and market placements, reflecting a broader strategy of streamlining parts of its investment portfolio while maintaining focus on core businesses such as gaming, cloud computing, artificial intelligence, and digital services.
For Kuaishou, the share placement is not expected to affect day-to-day operations, but large secondary offerings can influence short-term market sentiment as investors assess the increase in available shares and the implications of a major shareholder reducing its position.
The planned transaction also highlights the continued depth of Hong Kong’s equity capital markets, where large technology companies frequently use block trades to adjust strategic holdings while attracting institutional investors.
