French government survives no-confidence vote as heatwave motion fails in Parliament
The French government has comfortably survived a no-confidence vote after lawmakers in the National Assembly overwhelmingly rejected a motion introduced by the Green parliamentary group over the government's handling of the recent heatwave.
Only 132 lawmakers voted in favor of the motion, well short of the 289 votes required to bring down Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu’s government.
The outcome exposed divisions within France’s left-wing opposition, with the Socialist Party (PS) split over whether to support the initiative. While a number of Socialist lawmakers, including party leader Olivier Faure, backed the motion, most members of the party declined to join the effort.
According to parliamentary sources, the motion received the support of all deputies from La France Insoumise (LFI), 32 of the Green group's 38 lawmakers, seven members of the GDR group, and 20 of the Socialist Party's 68 deputies.
The Greens had tabled the motion to criticize the government's response to the recent period of extreme heat, arguing that stronger action was needed to address the consequences of climate change and improve national preparedness.
The government rejected those accusations during the parliamentary debate, insisting that the motion relied on incomplete data and politicized the human impact of the heatwave. Prime Minister Lecornu maintained that discussions on climate resilience should be based on verified information and constructive policy proposals rather than partisan confrontation.
With the motion defeated by a wide margin, the government remains firmly in office, although the debate highlighted continuing disagreements over climate policy and emergency preparedness within the French political landscape.
