Emmanuel Macron expected in Syria in landmark visit confirmed by Syrian presidency

The Syrian presidency has announced that French President Emmanuel Macron is expected to travel to Syria, marking a potentially historic diplomatic moment as Western engagement with the country continues to evolve following a major political transition in Damascus.

No specific date has been provided for the visit, which would make Macron the first leader of a major Western power to travel to Syria since the change of leadership at the end of 2024, when Ahmad el-Chareh assumed the presidency.

If confirmed, the trip would represent a significant step in France’s recalibration of its relationship with Syria after more than a decade of diplomatic rupture. Relations between Paris and Damascus were effectively frozen in the aftermath of the 2011 uprising and subsequent civil conflict.
