Samsung consumer electronics workers plan protest over widening bonus gap
Workers in Samsung Electronics' smartphone, television and home appliance businesses are preparing to stage a large-scale protest later this month, highlighting growing tensions over disparities in employee compensation across the company's divisions.
The demonstration, scheduled for July 16, follows a recent wage agreement secured by employees in Samsung's semiconductor business, where significantly higher bonuses have sparked dissatisfaction among staff in the consumer electronics segment.
Bonus disparity fuels discontent
According to the union representing workers in Samsung's mobile and consumer electronics operations, employees are protesting what they view as a substantial imbalance in incentive payments.
Media reports indicate that workers in the non-semiconductor division are expected to receive treasury shares valued at around 6 million won for 2026. By comparison, employees in the semiconductor business could receive bonuses worth as much as 600 million won following the recently negotiated compensation package.
The sharp difference has intensified demands for what union members describe as a fairer reward structure across the company.
Thousands expected to attend rally
Union officials expect between 2,000 and 3,000 employees to participate in the protest near Samsung's headquarters in Suwon.
The organisation behind the rally represents approximately 28,000 workers employed in Samsung's mobile devices and consumer electronics operations, making it one of the largest labour groups within the company.
The planned demonstration reflects broader concerns about how the financial success of Samsung's fast-growing semiconductor business is being shared across its wider workforce.
Strong earnings expected despite labour tensions
The labour dispute comes as Samsung prepares to release preliminary earnings for the second quarter.
Market expectations point to a sharp increase in operating profit compared with the same period a year earlier, driven largely by continued strength in the semiconductor division.
The contrast between improving financial performance and growing internal demands over compensation underscores the challenges facing Samsung as it seeks to balance business success with employee expectations across its diverse operations.
