Italy: Bomb explodes under car of famous journalist, No Victims
A bomb exploded overnight from Thursday to Friday, destroying the car of renowned Italian journalist Sigfrido Ranucci without causing any casualties, the television program Report, which he directs on Italy’s public broadcaster RAI, announced on X.
The explosion occurred about twenty kilometers south of Rome, also damaging his daughter’s car and the façade of his house. “The power of the explosion was such that it could have killed someone if they had been nearby,” Report stated, adding that an investigation has been opened.
The attack has prompted widespread condemnation from across the Italian political spectrum. Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni expressed her “full solidarity” with the journalist and “strongly condemned this serious act of intimidation.” “Freedom and independence of information are values of our democracy that we cannot renounce and will continue to defend,” she said in a statement.
According to La Repubblica, Ranucci plans to file a complaint. “I still don’t know how to interpret what happened,” he told the newspaper. “Over the past few months, several strange incidents have occurred, but I didn’t make them public to protect my family. Last summer, two P38 bullets were found outside my home. There have also been several attempts to discredit me.”
Ranucci has previously been the target of threats and intimidation, all reported to the authorities, with investigations ongoing, according to the Italian media.
