Irish football association calls on UEFA to ban Israel from European competitions
The Football Association of Ireland (FAI) has voted in favor of submitting a motion to UEFA calling for the exclusion of Israel from all European competitions, citing alleged violations of the organization’s statutes.
The proposal, introduced by Dublin’s Bohemians Football Club, received the backing of a large majority of delegates, surpassing the 50% approval threshold. According to the FAI, the motion is based on two main concerns: the organization of Israeli clubs in occupied Palestinian territories without prior authorization from the Palestinian Football Association, and the alleged failure of the Israeli Football Association to implement an effective anti-racism policy.
In an official statement, the FAI said it will also urge UEFA to establish clear and transparent criteria for suspending or excluding member associations, ensuring “equal treatment for all.”
The UEFA Executive Committee is set to meet on December 3 in Nyon, Switzerland, to review several disciplinary and regulatory cases, including this one.
This vote comes shortly after FIFA’s Council reaffirmed its neutral stance, encouraging national federations to promote dialogue and peace rather than impose sanctions.
Israel, currently third in its 2026 World Cup qualifying group, is scheduled to play its final match against Moldova on November 16.
Last month, UEFA postponed an initial vote on Israel’s possible suspension following a joint diplomatic initiative led by U.S. President Donald Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to revive peace discussions surrounding the ongoing conflict in Gaza, now entering its second year.
