Inside Apple’s secret AI meeting that reshaped Siri strategy
A closed-door discussion in early 2025 marked a turning point in Apple’s artificial intelligence ambitions. Senior executives gathered near the company’s software engineering division to confront a growing internal concern. Apple Intelligence had failed to meet expectations and the long-delayed overhaul of Siri faced further setbacks. The absence of Tim Cook from the meeting underscored its urgency, while operational leadership coordinated the response.
The meeting brought together key figures across Apple’s leadership, including software, design, AI, and product engineering executives. Participants assessed the widening gap between Apple and competitors in generative AI and concluded that the company’s existing approach required structural change. Mike Rockwell, known for leading the Vision Pro project, volunteered to take charge of Siri’s rebuild. Craig Federighi was assigned oversight of the software direction, while a parallel search began for a new leader to manage foundational AI models, a role later filled by Amar Subramanya.
Following the internal review, Apple’s chief executive intensified his involvement in the company’s AI strategy. He began taking a more direct role in roadmap decisions and pushed internal teams to accelerate development timelines. The leadership shift also triggered a broader reorganization of Siri’s development structure, placing Rockwell in charge of the assistant’s redesign and consolidating oversight under senior software leadership. The changes reflected a recognition that Apple’s previous incremental strategy had fallen behind industry standards.
The restructuring also opened the door to an external technology partnership that reshaped Apple’s AI infrastructure plans. The company committed to a multiyear arrangement with Google to license its Gemini model, with annual costs estimated at around one billion dollars. The system is intended to support a rebuilt version of Siri and improve its generative capabilities. Apple positioned the partnership as a foundational layer rather than a replacement for its internal models.
The results of this strategic shift are expected to be presented at WWDC 2026 in Cupertino. The event is set to introduce a redesigned Siri under the codename Campo, featuring a conversational interface, multi-step task execution, and deeper system integration. Additional features include AI-generated tools for media creation and expanded web-based intelligence functions designed to compete with leading chatbot platforms.
