Independence manifesto anniversary: Royal pardon granted to 1,386 people
On the occasion of the anniversary commemorating the presentation of the Independence Manifesto, His Majesty King Mohammed VI has granted a Royal pardon to 1,386 people convicted by various courts across the Kingdom, according to a statement released by the Ministry of Justice.
The beneficiaries include both detainees and individuals serving sentences while at liberty. Among those currently in detention, a total of 1,157 inmates benefited from the Royal clemency, through sentence reductions, full remission of prison terms, or, in one case, the commutation of a life sentence into a fixed-term sentence.
In addition, 214 people not in custody received pardons, covering prison sentences, fines, or a combination of both. These measures aim to ease penalties while promoting reintegration and social stability.
In a notable gesture, the Royal pardon also extended to 15 detainees convicted in cases related to extremism and terrorism, after they officially expressed adherence to the nation’s fundamental values, revised their ideological positions, and rejected extremism and violence. Their sentences were partially reduced following Royal approval.
This Royal initiative reflects Morocco’s tradition of clemency and reconciliation, particularly during national commemorations, underscoring the Kingdom’s commitment to justice tempered with mercy.
