Hungary vows to block EU sanctions amid pipeline dispute
Hungary has announced it will oppose the European Union's upcoming sanctions against Russia, citing concerns over oil supplies through the Druzhba pipeline. This decision comes as tensions rise over the disruption of Russian oil shipments to Hungary and Slovakia.
The flow of Russian oil via the Druzhba pipeline was halted at the end of January after Ukraine reported damage to pipeline infrastructure following a drone incident. Both Hungary and Slovakia have criticized Ukraine for the extended interruption, arguing it impacts energy security in the region.
The EU is preparing its 20th sanctions package in response to Russia's ongoing war in Ukraine. While many member states hope to finalize the measures ahead of the fourth anniversary of Russia’s large-scale invasion, Hungary’s foreign minister has stated the country will block the approval until oil transit through the pipeline resumes.
Hungary’s stance highlights the challenges the EU faces in uniting its members on sanctions when energy dependency and regional disputes come into play.
