Former Zambian Vice President Guy Scott dies at 82

Former Zambian Vice President Guy Scott, who briefly served as the country's acting president in 2014 and became the first white head of state in Africa in two decades, has died at the age of 82, the Zambian government announced on Wednesday.

Scott passed away after an illness at his farm in the Leopards Hill area near Lusaka. President Hakainde Hichilema has ordered that he be honored with a state funeral in recognition of his public service and contribution to Zambia's political history.

A historic chapter in Zambia's leadership

Scott entered the history books in October 2014 when he assumed the role of acting president following the death of President Michael Sata, under whom he had served as vice president since 2011.

He remained interim head of state until January 2015, overseeing the constitutional transition that led to the election of a new president.

His appointment was historically significant, making him the first white leader of an African country since former South African President F.W. de Klerk left office in 1994.

Economist turned national leader

Born in Zambia to Scottish parents, Scott studied economics at the University of Cambridge before returning to pursue a career that combined agriculture, public service and politics.

His tenure as acting president was shaped by Zambia's constitutional framework. Although he held the country's highest office on an interim basis, he was not eligible to contest the subsequent presidential election because the constitution at the time required presidential candidates to have parents born in Zambia.

Despite that restriction, Scott remained a prominent figure in Zambian politics and was widely recognized for his outspoken views and distinctive role in the country's democratic transition.

State funeral announced

The Zambian government confirmed that Scott died after an illness and announced that he would receive a state funeral, reflecting his status as one of the country's most prominent political leaders.

Tributes are expected from political figures across Zambia and the wider African continent, with many likely to remember his contribution during a critical period of constitutional succession and political stability.

Scott's legacy remains closely linked to a unique moment in African political history, when he became the caretaker leader of Zambia during one of the country's most significant democratic transitions.
