Morocco climbs to 65th place in the 2026 Global Peace Index
Morocco has improved its position in the 2026 Global Peace Index (GPI), climbing to 65th place out of 163 countries, according to the latest report published by the Institute for Economics and Peace (IEP). The Kingdom recorded one of the most notable improvements in this year's rankings, moving up by more than 20 places compared with the previous edition.
The Global Peace Index measures the level of peacefulness in countries using indicators that include societal safety and security, the extent of ongoing domestic and international conflict, and the degree of militarization.
The report notes that global peace has continued to decline for the twelfth consecutive year, reflecting the growing impact of armed conflicts, geopolitical tensions, political instability, and humanitarian crises affecting several regions around the world.
Despite these global challenges, Morocco strengthened its position as one of the more stable countries in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region. The report attributes this performance to relatively stable domestic conditions and continued efforts to maintain public security and social cohesion.
Within Africa, Morocco ranked seventh, while among Arab countries it placed fourth, behind Qatar, Kuwait, and Oman. These rankings highlight the country's comparatively favorable security environment within a region that continues to face significant geopolitical and security challenges.
Although the MENA region remains one of the least peaceful globally due to ongoing conflicts in several countries, Morocco maintained positive momentum and improved its standing by limiting the impact of regional instability on its internal environment.
Analysts note that a stronger performance in international peace and stability indices can enhance a country's international image, strengthen investor confidence, support tourism, and reinforce its role as a reliable regional partner in security and economic cooperation.
The latest ranking reflects Morocco's continued efforts to preserve internal stability while navigating an increasingly complex international environment marked by rising geopolitical uncertainty and evolving security threats.
