India expands semiconductor strategy with $13.3 billion investment boost
India has approved a major expansion of its semiconductor development programme, allocating an additional 1.28 trillion rupees ($13.3 billion) in new funding to strengthen the country’s position in the global chip industry.
The decision reflects New Delhi’s ambition to build a more competitive domestic technology ecosystem and reduce reliance on international supply chains for critical electronic components.
Government accelerates chip manufacturing ambitions
The additional capital was approved by India’s cabinet as part of a broader effort to develop the semiconductor sector, according to Information Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw.
The investment is expected to support the expansion of chip-related infrastructure and encourage further participation from companies operating in advanced technology manufacturing.
Semiconductors have become a strategic priority for governments worldwide as demand grows across industries including artificial intelligence, telecommunications, automotive technology and consumer electronics.
Strengthening India’s role in global technology supply chains
India has been seeking to position itself as a major player in semiconductor production by attracting investment, developing manufacturing capabilities and building domestic expertise.
The new funding package is part of the country’s wider industrial strategy aimed at boosting high-value manufacturing and creating a stronger foundation for its digital economy.
Officials view the semiconductor sector as a key element of India’s long-term economic growth and technological independence.
Competition intensifies in global chip market
The move comes as countries around the world increase support for semiconductor industries following supply chain disruptions and rising demand for advanced computing technologies.
India’s expanded programme places the country in a more competitive position as governments and companies invest heavily in securing access to next-generation chips.
