China dismisses Taiwan military drills as cross-strait tensions continue
China has criticized Taiwan's latest military exercises, describing them as ineffective and reaffirming its long-standing position that the island is part of its territory. The comments were made by a spokesperson for the Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council, who argued that military activities organized by Taiwan's authorities would not alter Beijing's stance on cross-strait relations.
Speaking at a regular press briefing, the spokesperson said that any attempt to strengthen Taiwan's military capabilities would not change what Beijing considers the inevitable course of national reunification. Chinese officials also accused Taiwan's ruling administration of increasing tensions in the Taiwan Strait through its defense policies.
The remarks came after Taiwan launched a series of multi-day military exercises designed to improve coordination among its armed forces and strengthen defensive preparedness. Taiwanese officials have stated that the drills are routine and are intended to enhance the island's ability to respond to potential security threats.
In recent years, Taiwan has expanded military training and invested in defense modernization as Chinese military activity around the island has increased. The People's Liberation Army has regularly conducted air and naval operations near Taiwan, which Beijing says are intended to safeguard its sovereignty and national interests.
The Taiwan Strait remains one of the most sensitive geopolitical flashpoints in Asia. While China considers Taiwan a breakaway province that should eventually be reunified with the mainland, Taiwan maintains its own government, military, and democratic institutions. Most countries, including the United States, officially recognize the "One China" policy while maintaining unofficial relations with Taipei.
Regional governments and international observers continue to call for restraint from all sides, warning that any escalation could have serious consequences for regional stability, global trade, and international security. The Taiwan Strait is a vital maritime route through which a significant share of global commercial shipping passes each year.
Analysts believe that military exercises conducted by both China and Taiwan are likely to remain a recurring feature of cross-strait relations, highlighting the ongoing strategic competition and the importance of diplomatic efforts to reduce tensions.
