Google unveils major update to Google Images after 25 years
Google has announced a major redesign of Google Images, introducing new features powered by artificial intelligence as the company modernizes one of its most widely used search services more than 25 years after its launch. The update includes a refreshed browsing experience, personalized image recommendations, improved organization of saved content, and upcoming AI-powered image generation tools designed to make visual search more interactive. Google also reflected on the origins of Google Images, recalling the famous green Versace dress worn by Jennifer Lopez at the 2000 Grammy Awards. The overwhelming public interest in finding photographs of the outfit highlighted the limitations of traditional text-based search at the time and inspired the company to create a dedicated image search platform, which officially launched in 2001. While the visual appearance of the service remains largely familiar, Google says the new version delivers search results that update dynamically and are increasingly personalized based on each user's interests and browsing behavior. The company has also simplified the process of saving images. Users can continue storing favorite pictures within their Google account, while redesigned collections and saved-image sections make it easier to organize and revisit content later. Another significant addition will be the gradual rollout of AI-powered image creation directly within Google Search. Users will be able to generate original images simply by entering text descriptions, eliminating the need to switch to separate creative applications. The feature is expected to rely on Google's latest generative AI technologies and will initially become available in supported regions before expanding more broadly. Google stated that the redesigned Google Images experience will first launch on desktop devices in the United States, with English-language support, before reaching additional markets. The update reflects Google's broader strategy of integrating artificial intelligence across its search ecosystem. As AI becomes increasingly central to online search, the company aims to combine traditional search capabilities with personalized recommendations, visual discovery, and generative tools to create a more intuitive user experience. More than two decades after transforming the way people search for images online, Google Images continues to evolve, adapting to changing user expectations and advances in artificial intelligence.
