UN human rights chief warns renewed U.S.-Iran conflict threatens regional stability
The United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Türk, has warned that renewed military tensions between the United States and Iran pose a serious threat to civilians, regional stability, and international peace.
In a statement, Türk said that the escalation risks undermining diplomatic efforts while increasing instability across the Middle East. He stressed that civilians are likely to bear the greatest burden of any prolonged conflict and called on all parties to respect their obligations under international humanitarian law.
The UN official urged those involved in the conflict to take every possible measure to protect civilian populations and civilian infrastructure, emphasizing that compliance with international law remains essential during periods of armed confrontation.
Türk also expressed concern over reports involving disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world's most strategically important maritime routes. Any interruption to shipping through the waterway, he warned, could have significant humanitarian and economic consequences by affecting global supplies of food, medicine, energy, and other essential goods.
The warning comes as international organizations continue to monitor developments in the Gulf, where rising geopolitical tensions have heightened concerns over regional security and global economic stability.
The United Nations has repeatedly emphasized the importance of dialogue and diplomacy in resolving disputes. UN officials continue to encourage all parties to prioritize negotiations and peaceful solutions in order to reduce the risk of further escalation and limit the humanitarian impact of the crisis.
Analysts note that any prolonged confrontation between Washington and Tehran could extend beyond the region, affecting international trade, energy markets, and global supply chains while increasing uncertainty for governments and businesses worldwide.
