E. Jean Carroll receives $5.62 million following civil judgment against Donald Trump

American writer E. Jean Carroll has received approximately $5.62 million following the enforcement of a civil court judgment against US President Donald Trump in a case involving sexual abuse and defamation.

According to court records and media reports, the payment includes the $5 million in damages awarded by a federal jury in 2023, along with accrued legal interest that accumulated while the case proceeded through the appeals process. The funds were released after the available legal challenges related to that judgment were exhausted.

The civil case centered on Carroll's allegations that Trump sexually assaulted her in a Manhattan department store during the 1990s and later defamed her by publicly denying her claims. A federal jury found Trump civilly liable for sexual abuse and defamation, awarding Carroll financial compensation. The verdict was issued under the civil standard of proof and did not involve criminal charges.

The case has drawn significant public attention because of Trump's political position and its broader implications for accountability in high-profile legal disputes.

In a separate defamation lawsuit involving Carroll, Trump is also challenging a much larger financial judgment. That case remains under review by a federal appeals court, meaning no final decision has yet been reached regarding the additional damages awarded.

Legal experts note that the two cases are distinct, although both stem from Trump's public statements about Carroll and her allegations. The ongoing appeal could determine whether the second judgment is upheld, modified, or overturned.

The proceedings have become one of the most closely followed civil legal battles involving a sitting US president, highlighting the role of the American judicial system in resolving disputes involving public figures. Further developments are expected as the appellate process continues in the remaining case.
