Hezbollah honors slain commander Fouad Chokor with commemorative monument
On the first anniversary of his death, a commemorative monument honoring Fouad Chokor, a former senior military commander of Hezbollah, was unveiled in Haret Hreik, a southern suburb of Beirut. The ceremony was organized by the local municipality at the exact location where Chokor was killed in an Israeli airstrike in July 2024.
Chokor, described by the Israeli military as Hezbollah’s top-ranking military official and a close associate of the group’s leader Hassan Nasrallah, was a central figure in the party’s military leadership. His death came during a period of heightened conflict between Hezbollah and Israel, which escalated into open warfare in late 2024.
The inauguration event was attended by several Hezbollah lawmakers, including MPs Ali Ammar, Amine Cherri, and Ibrahim Moussaoui, as well as party officials, municipal leaders, and Chokor’s family.
Mahmoud Comati, Hezbollah’s deputy political council head and a former minister, emphasized the unity and resilience of the resistance: “The real threat to Lebanon today is its very existence as a nation. We must consolidate all our efforts alongside the Lebanese Army to safeguard our country.”
The vice president of Haret Hreik’s municipal council, Sadek Slim, described the monument as “a modest token of loyalty for an exceptional man” and a symbol honoring “all martyrs of the sacred battle to defend our land and dignity.”
The monument stands as a reminder of the volatile dynamics in the region. The 2023-2024 conflict saw Hezbollah launch cross-border attacks in support of Hamas following the outbreak of war in Gaza. After suffering heavy losses, including the deaths of most of its senior military leadership, Hezbollah agreed to a ceasefire on November 27, 2024.
