Germany Reopens Sigmaringen Military Base to Support New Voluntary Service Model
The German armed forces are preparing to reactivate the Sigmaringen military base in southwestern Germany, transforming the facility from a long-standing refugee reception center into an active military installation to support the nation's newly expanded voluntary service model.
According to reports from the German press agency dpa, the base—which has been shuttered for 12 years—will be repurposed to provide essential infrastructure for the voluntary military service initiative launched this past January. The site will serve as the headquarters for Baden-Württemberg's newly formed 112th Territorial Defense Battalion at the former Count Stauffenberg barracks.
Revival of Infrastructure and Recruitment Strategy
The initial formation of the battalion is scheduled for October 1, with troop numbers expected to scale up to approximately 1,000 personnel upon full operational capacity. While parts of the property currently function as an initial reception facility for refugees, military planners intend to construct modular housing units in the coming weeks to accommodate incoming soldiers and administrative staff.
The reopening aligns with broader legislative measures approved by the German parliament. Under the current legal framework, military service remains voluntary, though the system introduces mandatory registration and medical evaluations for young citizens turning 18. However, the legislation preserves the mechanism to reinstate a draft should voluntary recruitment fall short or regional security conditions deteriorate, allowing authorities to activate mandatory service via randomized selection if necessary.
