Gabon’s former leader Bongo freed and moves to Angola
Ali Bongo Ondimba, the former president of Gabon, along with his family, has been released from house arrest and has arrived in Angola’s capital, Luanda, according to the Angolan presidency. Bongo’s family had governed Gabon for 55 years before he was removed from power in a coup in August 2023. Since then, he had been confined to his residence in Libreville.
The Angolan presidency announced the family’s arrival on Facebook, sharing photos of Bongo being greeted at the airport. This development came after discussions between Angola’s President João Lourenço and Gabon’s current leader, Brice Oligui Nguema, although specific details were not disclosed.
Brice Oligui Nguema, who led the military junta, was elected president in April with nearly 95% of the vote. Bongo’s wife, Sylvia, and their son Noureddin, who were also detained on charges of embezzlement, had reportedly been moved from prison cells to a residence in Libreville prior to their release.
Nguema officially assumed office in early May, marking the end of the Bongo family’s 55-year rule following the August 2023 coup.
