Flu: “It is still time to get vaccinated,” says the health minister
The flu epidemic in France is approaching its peak, but vaccination remains effective and strongly recommended, Health Minister Stéphanie Rist said on Friday during a visit to a hospital in Lyon.
According to the minister, the country is currently experiencing a high phase of the epidemic, though the peak has not yet been clearly passed. “We know we have reached the peak only when cases begin to decline,” she explained, adding that France is still in a period of intense viral circulation.
Data released this week by Public Health France show that the flu epidemic continues to intensify, although it remains at a moderate level. Health authorities estimate that the peak is most likely to occur during the final week of 2025, with a smaller probability that it will be reached in the first days of 2026.
Stéphanie Rist highlighted a positive trend in vaccination coverage, noting an increase of more than 17% compared to last year. However, she insisted that people can still benefit from getting vaccinated, especially vulnerable groups.
The minister also warned of a potential rise in cases after the end-of-year holidays, when people return from travel and family gatherings. She emphasized the continued importance of preventive measures, such as wearing a mask when experiencing symptoms and maintaining proper hand hygiene.
Addressing the temporary requisition of doctors in certain regions to cope with winter epidemics, the minister said such measures are not unusual and are sometimes necessary to ensure access to healthcare during busy periods.
