Flock Fatalities: The Truth Behind Berrechid's Ovine Tragedy
In a grim incident that unfolded over the past three days, the pastoral landscape of Mabarkine commune within Berrechid province bore witness to a distressing scene—the untimely demise of at least 70 sheep, collectively valued at a staggering 140,000 dirhams according to online reports. This ovine tragedy sparked concerns among citizens regarding the animals' well-being and potential risks to human health. Prompted by the outcry, the National Office of Food Safety (ONSSA) launched a comprehensive investigation, ultimately unveiling the enigmatic reasons behind these fatalities.
Disturbing reports of sudden sheep deaths surfaced from a farm situated in the Ouled El Himer district of Berrechid province. Alarmed by the situation, a technical team from the provincial veterinary service swiftly mobilized on June 1st and 2nd to unravel the circumstances and causes surrounding these untimely losses, as stated in ONSSA's communiqué.
Thorough investigations, laboratory analyses, and on-site examinations conducted during this visit revealed that the afflicted animals were isolated cases, unaffected by any contagious disease, the ONSSA explained.
Laboratory findings confirmed that the sheep, destined for fattening, fell victim to food poisoning caused by the proliferation of the "Clostridium perfringens" bacteria. Typically residing in minute quantities within the intestines, this bacterial surge triggered a wave of sudden and progressive deaths among the flock over the course of several days.
The farm's investigation, coupled with laboratory results, conclusively determined that these food poisoning incidents were linked to an abrupt shift in the animals' dietary regimen, involving a modification of protein and cereal-based feed sources. This disruption upset the delicate balance of intestinal bacteria, paving the way for the rapid multiplication of Clostridium.
Notably, ONSSA reported that the remaining sheep on the farm, whose dietary routines remained unchanged, exhibited no signs of illness and maintained a healthy condition.
With meticulous attention to detail and a commitment to uncovering the truth, ONSSA's investigation has shed light on this ovine tragedy, underscoring the profound impact of dietary changes on animal well-being.
